BROOKINGS, OREGON
Brookings and Harbor are the southernmost communities on the Oregon Coast.

The mildest climate on the coast gives Brookings-Harbor, Oregon, its name of Oregon's Banana Belt. The climate is temperate all year, with temperatures of 70 degrees common in July or January. Brookings-Harbor is also famous for growing nearly 90% of America's Easter lilies, and an early summer drive between Brookings-Harbor and Crescent City takes you through breathtaking views of fields of blooming lilies.
Brookings-Harbor is the only spot in the continental U.S. that was bombed by a foreign power (Japan) in World War II. The bomb site is marked by a monument accessed from the Bombsite Trail, located about 10 miles inland from Brookings-Harbor on South Bank Road.
In December, Azalea Park is transformed into a winter wonderland with Nature's Coastal Holiday Light Show and Sculpture Display.
Loeb State Park is about 8 miles up the north bank of the Chetco River. This park has 320 acres of myrtle wood (found only in Oregon and the Middle East), Chetco River access, and fishing and camping areas. Loeb State Park is home to Oregon's largest stand of coastal redwoods.
Four miles north of Brookings-Harbor, Samuel H. Boardman State Park encompasses 11 miles of Oregon's most spectacular and scenic coastline. The seven mile Oregon Coast Trail is the best way to experience one of the world's finest coastline stretches. There are many viewpoints along the trail, including House Rock Viewpoint and Whalehead Viewpoint. Boardman Park is also known as being a great tidepooling area during low tide, where visitors can scramble out among the rocks and see starfish, sea urchins, crabs, sea anemones and other ocean creatures.
Kite flying is a popular activity. Harris Beach State Park and the port area are favorite places to try your kite, and there is an annual Kite Festival, which attracts professional as well as amateur flyers.
They are unusual in a number of ways- They are on the highly populated Pacific coast, yet are quite isolated, by the Kalmiopsis wilderness area, Redwood National Park, a multitude of clear-flowing rivers (the Chetco, Winchuck, Smith, Pistol, Rogue, Elk, Klamath and many smaller streams) and miles of rarely touched beaches. It 100 miles to any big town-- Coos Bay is 100 miles north, Grants Pass 100 Miles East, and Eureka California is 100 miles south.
